FINISH · FLAKE

BROADCAST. SCRAPE. SEAL.

A flake floor is a coating with decorative vinyl chips broadcast into it, scraped and sealed under a clear topcoat. It is the practical, textured choice for garages and busy spaces.

How a flake floor is built

  • The concrete is prepared and repaired
  • A base coat goes down, often tinted to match the flake blend
  • Coloured flakes are broadcast into the wet base coat, lightly or until the surface is fully covered
  • Once cured, loose flakes are scraped off and the floor is cleaned
  • One or more clear topcoats seal the flakes in

Choices that change the look

Flake blends come in many colour mixes and chip sizes. Larger chips read as bold and speckled; smaller chips look closer to granite from a distance. A full broadcast, where the floor is covered in flake, gives the most uniform texture and hides the base coat entirely.

Why people choose flake

Flake floors hide dust, small debris and minor imperfections better than glossy solid or metallic finishes, and the chips add a little texture underfoot. That makes them a common choice for garages, workshops, basements and back-of-house commercial areas.

Questions we hear

Is flake better than metallic for a garage?

Neither is better in every garage. Flake is more forgiving of grit and dust; metallic gives a high-impact look. Our finish guide compares them side by side.
