GUIDE · HIRING

ASK BEFORE YOU SIGN.

Two epoxy quotes can look similar and be very different jobs. These questions make the difference visible, whoever you hire.

About the work

  • Which products will you use for each layer, and can I see the data sheets?
  • How will you prepare the concrete, and what surface profile does the product need?
  • Will you test the slab for moisture, and which test do you use?
  • How will you handle cracks, joints, drains and the edges?
  • Can I see photos of floors you have installed yourself?

About the schedule

  • How many days will you be on site?
  • When can people walk on the floor, and when can vehicles or equipment go back on it?
  • What temperature does the product need, and how will you manage it?
  • Will there be odour or dust, and how will you contain it?

About the paperwork

In Ontario, a WSIB clearance is a number issued by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board showing that a business is registered and up to date. Clearances are valid for up to 90 days, and anyone can look one up online by business name, phone number or address.

Homeowners hiring a contractor for repairs or renovations to their own home don't need a clearance. Businesses are different: WSIB warns that both a contractor and the business that hired them can be committing an offence when the contractor should be covered and isn't, so commercial clients should ask for a current clearance before work starts.

  • Is the quote itemised, with the scope, preparation and products written down?
  • What does the written warranty cover, for how long, and what voids it?
  • Do you carry liability insurance, and can I get a certificate?
  • For contractors who need WSIB coverage, can you provide a WSIB clearance certificate?
